Learn the science-backed benefits of a 5-minute workout. Improve heart health, boost mood, and build a habit—all in just minutes a day.
The Power of Five: How a 5-Minute Daily Workout Can Transform Your Health
There are so many people out there that tout the only way to benefit from exercise is to workout for up to an hour per day. While there are benefits to longer workouts, in my educated opinion, short workouts can offer even more. Why? Because they are doable! Doable things are what become the habits that stick. Habits that stick are what bring long-term health benefits.
Beyond my own educated opinion, there are also research studies that show that exercising for just five minutes per day can improve your health. Here are some of these health benefits:
1. Improved Cardiovascular Health

A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that running for just 5 to 10 minutes a day at slow speeds was associated with a 45% lower risk of death from heart disease compared to non-runners. That’s a powerful payoff for a small time investment! This could be as simple as playing a short game of tag with your child, or dancing around your living room to your favorite song.

2. Enhanced Mental Health

Short workouts have also been shown to boost mood and reduce stress. According to a 2025 study in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, five minutes of exercise per day can improve physical fitness and boost mood. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a quick dance session, or a few rounds of jumping jacks, your brain gets a feel-good hit of endorphins.
3. Supports Weight Maintenance and Metabolism
While five minutes isn’t a weight-loss magic bullet, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in small doses has been shown to elevate metabolism and improve insulin sensitivity. A 2016 study demonstrated that short, intense bouts of exercise (as little as 4–7 minutes) can significantly boost fat oxidation and metabolic health, particularly when done consistently.
4. Improved Flexibility and Mobility

In a small study conducted by researchers from Edith Cowan University, they found that a daily 5 minute exercise routine, done for four weeks improved both muscle strength and flexibility among participants. Why is flexibility important? Improving flexibility means reduced stiffness, increased mobility and prevention of injuries. Sounds good, right?!
5. Builds Habit and Consistency
One of the best 5-minute workout benefits is habit formation. Behavioral scientists suggest that small, consistent actions are more likely to become long-term habits. BJ Fogg, behavior expert at Stanford, argues that “tiny habits” are the secret to sustained change. Starting small makes it easier to stick with the routine. This leads to doing more over time. I can say from my experience, this is absolutely true!
